Emilia Clarke will make her West End debut in a new production of The Seagull.

The 33-year-old actress will star in Anya Reiss’ adaptation of the Anton Chekhov play.

Director Jamie Lloyd is staging the production at Playhouse Theatre in London. Previews begin March 11, with opening night to follow March 19.

Clarke will play Nina in The Seagull, which follows the romantic and artistic conflicts of four creatives at an isolated house in the countryside.

“I am over the moon to be playing Nina in Jamie Lloyd’s interpretation of The Seagull,” Clarke said in a statement. “I’ve long been a fan of the singular vision he brings to each of his masterful productions and the way he approaches classical texts. We are so lucky to be working with Anya’s brilliant adaptation, as she brings a light touch of modernity to this beautifully crafted play. I cannot wait to get stuck in with these two visionaries.”

The Jamie Lloyd Company confirmed Clarke’s casting in a tweet Thursday.

“New show? OK. EMILIA CLARKE will make her West End debut as Nina, in a version of THE SEAGULL by @Anya_Reiss,” the post reads. “Chekhov’s tale of ambition, love, loneliness & fame is propelled into the 21st century.”

Clarke previously made her Broadway debut as Holly Golightly in a production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 2013.

Clarke is best known for playing Daenerys Targaryen on the HBO series Game of Thrones. She most recently starred in the film Last Christmas, which opened in theaters in November. [Source]

Universal has dated its Paul Feig-directed romantic comedy Last Christmas starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson for November 8, 2019. That’s ahead a week from its originally announced November 15 date. Deadline broke the news about the project back in June.

Last Christmas is inspired by the hit holiday ballad by the late George Michael and will feature unreleased music by the former Wham co-founder who has sold north of 115 million albums and recorded 10 No. 1 singles throughout his career. Pic was written by Oscar winner Thompson and playwright Bryony Kimmings.

In the movie, Kate (Clarke) harumphs around London, a bundle of bad decisions accompanied by the jangle of bells on her shoes, another irritating consequence from her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. Tom (Golding) seems too good to be true when he walks into her life and starts to see through so many of Kate’s barriers. As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, nothing should work for these two.

Last Christmas is produced by Feig and Jessie Henderson for his Feigco Entertainment, by BAFTA winner David Livingstone for Calamity Films, and Thompson.

On November 8, the film now joins releases for Warner Bros’ Doctor Sleep, Lionsgate’s WWII pic Midway and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog.

Don’t underestimate British-centered holiday romantic comedies. Working Title/Universal’s ensemble Love Actually is still a holiday perennial, made for $40M back in 2003, amassing a then global cume of $246.9M. Thompson also starred in that movie. [Source]

The production team behind HBO’s blockbuster “Game of Thrones” will be given the BAFTA Special Award at this year’s British Academy Television Craft Awards.

Hannah Murray and John Bradley from the hit series will collect the award on behalf of the team. BAFTA said the accolade is recognition of the boundaries that have been pushed across all areas of production in the making of the fantasy epic.

Filming is underway on the eighth and final six-episode season of “Game of Thrones,” which will air in 2019. HBO is working on several potential spinoffs.

The award also recognizes the support that “Game of Thrones” has provided for high-end TV production in the U.K., BAFTA said. The show has filmed across various locations in Northern Ireland and set up a production headquarters at Titanic Studios in Belfast, the Northern Irish capital, which has been a base for the series since the pilot.

Speaking on behalf of the production team, executive producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff said in a statement: “Many, many people work insanely hard to create any film or television show. They are creators every bit as much as actors, writers, producers or directors, and deserve to be recognized as such.”

“The craft behind what is one of the most popular dramas of our time is nothing short of incredible, from the breath-taking location shots to the intricately designed costumes and set pieces, and not forgetting the level of detail from the makeup and prosthetics team, to name a few,” added Krishnendu Majumdar, chair of BAFTA’s television committee. “Huge congratulations to everyone involved.”

The BAFTA Craft Awards take place on April 22 in London. They will be live streamed on YouTube and Twitter. [Source]

Star Wars will return to the Cannes Film Festival with the global premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story, debuting out of competition on May 15.

Solo is not the first Star Wars film to debut at the star-studded event. Two of the prequel trilogy films, Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, also premiered out of competition in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Entertainment Weekly has additional details about the film festival’s ties to the franchise and Star Wars creator George Lucas.

Solo stars Alden Ehrenreich, stepping into Harrison Ford’s shoes as the young Han Solo, with Donald Glover as the Lando Calrissian, previously played by Billy Dee Williams. Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke, Westworld‘s Thandie Newton, and Woody Harrelson also have prominent roles in the movie.

The journey to Solo‘s release has been a turbulent one. Much like the first Star Wars standalone film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released in 2016, Solo has had some production issues—to the point when Lucasfilm fired the film’s original directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, for “creative differences.” Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy replaced them with Hollywood veteran Ron Howard, and Lord and Miller will received executive producer credits.

Disney and Lucasfilm released the official teaser trailer to the next standalone film in the Star Wars franchise in February, and Howard confirmed via Twitter at the end of March that another full-length trailer would follow soon, although an exact date has not been announced yet.

Troubles on set reportedly settled down once Howard took the helm, based on Vulture‘s recent interview with an anonymous actor, who described two very different production environments before and after the directorial change. Given that it is a Star Wars film, Solo is almost guaranteed to do well at the box office—even the much maligned prequel films broke records.
